Bmw Advanced Battery Charging System User Manual
I recently ordered a sYT12CL Scorpion AGM battery to replace my soon-to-fail Yuasa YB12AL-A OEM battery (my Battery Bug told me so). I decided to change to an AGM battery to avoid having to take the faux tank completely apart every 3 months to top off the water in the battery. The Scorpion is an exact replacement for the Yuasa YB12AL-A and two respected sources have told me they have used this exact battery with success in the same bike.
I have been using the BMW Maintenance Charger (which I understand is a private labeled Deltran Battery Tender Plus) on my bike regularly because I ride to work a very short distance nearly every day all year 'round. I put the bike on the charger every 2 weeks overnight. In the winter, I put it on the charger all the time I am not riding the bike. I do this because I use Gerbing gear in the winter and I want to start each ride with a fully charged battery. With that pattern of use and charging, my wet cell battery water level has only dropped from Max to half way to Min in 6 months.
I am interested in how others use chargers on AGM batteries. The BMW Maintenance Charger manual says the charger works with SLA (flooded), AGM, and Gel Cell lead acid batteries. I have read that AGM batteries have the same charging characteristics as a wet cell battery, but I also read that Gel Cell batteries have different charging characteristics. I assume the charger must be able to detect the difference, but I have no clue how it would do that.
I have read that when you get a new battery, it is a good idea to charge it fully before installing it, and this will extend the life of the battery.
I would like to hear from anyone running an AGM battery who also uses a charger.
I would assume that a 'smart charger' like the Deltran or the BMW Maintenance Charger would not over charge an AGM battery.
I have friends who use a maintenance charger on their bike year 'round when ever they are not riding the bike. I have only done that during the winter.
Any information on AGM batteries in the F650GS is appreciated.
